How to Fly During a Pandemic

Naomi Campbell, supermodel, queen of the catwalk and world traveler extraordinaire, has a few videos on her YouTube channel about her air travel experiences. One of those videos was done a few months back and shows how she chose to protect herself while flying during this pandemic.

And as an added bonus, here is another video that Naomi put on her YouTube channel one year ago. I love the time and energy that she puts in making sure her area is properly sanitized. This video was created pre-Coronavirus, but Naomi’s thoughts on cleaning the seat area she is about to occupy are what really stand out (2:30 into the video).

“I do not care what people think of me. It’s my health and it makes me feel better.” She was clearly ahead of our time since no one was even thinking of the word “coronavirus” in the summer of 2019, but to me, this is what really shows how to be a safe and happy air traveler. Who cares what others think of you? If you want to wear a mask, put it on. Want to wear two? Go for it! Would it give you peace of mind to wipe down the seat and tray table? By all means, do it. Take a page from Naomi and sanitize your seat and its surrounding area. Honestly, if you are boarding a flight thinking the cleaning crew has taken care of that for you just because we are in the midst of a pandemic, well, there’s this…

Although I have not personally seen anything like this, I can attest to having worked at least one flight that was designated as a quick turn and the cleaning crew did their usual fast pre-COVID turnaround of the plane. No deep cleaning, no fogging machine.

Our new normal of masks, social distancing and frequent hand sanitizing is here to stay for an unforeseeable future. Whatever your personal feelings are about this subject matter is not even worth debating. It is what it is, and whether you like it or not, the plane has already pushed back from the gate and started taxiing down the runway. Perhaps if more people thought like Naomi, and took the extra precautions (especially when it comes to wearing a mask) maybe we could finally make some progress in flattening the COVID-19 curve. So if you are thinking about booking some air travel in the near future, please follow whatever guidelines your carrier of choice has in place, and do what you can to protect yourself and stay healthy. And then…

Sit back, relax and enjoy the flight.
